Each registered domain name has a minimum of 2 Name Server records which show where it's hosted i.e. by using these records you direct your domain name to the servers of a particular website hosting provider. In this way, you've got both your website and your emails handled by the exact same company. On the lower level of the Domain Name System (DNS), however, there is a variety of other records, for example A and MX. The first one shows which server deals with the website for a given domain name and is always an IP address (, while the second one shows which server deals with the emails and is always an alphanumeric string (mx1.domain.com). As an illustration, any time you type a domain name in your browser, your request is directed through the global DNS system to the provider whose NS records the domain uses and from there you may be directed to the servers of another service provider in case you have set an IP address of the latter as an A record for your domain. Having independent records for the website and the emails means you may have your website and your emails with 2 different companies if you would like.

Custom MX and A Records in Hosting

If you have a hosting account through our company and you want to point either your website or your emails to an alternative company, it is going to take you literally just 2 clicks to do this. Our Hepsia CP comes with an easy-to-use DNS Records tool, where all your domains and subdomains are going to be listed alphabetically and you'll be able to see and modify the A and/or MX records for any of them. If you wish to use a different email provider and they ask you to create more MX records than the default 2, it won't take more than a few mouse clicks either to add them. Also you can set different latency for these records and the lower the latency, the greater the priority a particular MX record will have. The propagation of any record that you change or create won't take more than several hours and if needed, you will also be able to set the so-called Time-To-Live value, which reveals how long a record will stay active after it is changed or deleted.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

If you purchase a semi-dedicated server plan from us, you'll be able to see and update the A and MX records for any one of the domains or subdomains you host within the account. The Hepsia Control Panel, which you'll get to control the account, comes with an innovative, albeit easy-to-use tool in which all hosts will be listed in alphabetical order and you're going to be able to edit their records with no more than a few mouse clicks. If you have to set up a new record, it'll be equally simple - pick the domain/subdomain, enter the IP address or mail server record and you're going to be ready. You'll also be able to set different priority for the MX records you create in case you choose to use a third-party e-mail provider and they ask you to create additional records apart from the 2 default ones. If you encounter any troubles, you will find a comprehensive Help section with videos in which you can see first-hand how to setup or edit any record.
